Wood densities and allometries of tree species are of primary importance for volume and harvest predictions in any forestry operation. The values of these allometries also change regionally and Bintuni Bay mangroves have no local estimation. Therefore, Green Forest Product & Tech. Pte. Ltd and its supplier PT BUMWI have agreed to attempt to determine new tree stem allometries and wood densities for the three main species important to the industry: Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Bruguiera parviflora. This is done by:
- Measuring the exact stem weights per volume and logs (from sample stem disks) for three main mangrove species: Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and Bruguiera parviflora
- Correlating wood densities/ stem weight with forest structure (DBH, Tree Height, Canopy Area) and log dimensions (diameter, length)
The study is currently carried out in the operations and 2018-2019 harvest year. Preliminary results show distinct wood density values and predictable volumes for the three main tree species.
